What Does a Tax Director Do?

Short answer

A Tax Director oversees a company's tax compliance and planning end to end — preparing or reviewing returns, managing the tax provision, identifying credits and planning opportunities, handling audits, and advising leadership on the tax impact of major business decisions.

Core responsibilities

  • Compliance oversight. Ensuring federal, state, and (where relevant) international tax returns are accurate and filed on time.
  • Planning. Proactively identifying credits, deductions, entity structuring, and timing strategies that reduce tax liability.
  • Provision and financial reporting. Managing the income tax provision (ASC 740) that feeds into audited financial statements.
  • Audit and notice response. Acting as the point of contact when the IRS or a state tax authority has questions.
  • Cross-functional advisory. Weighing in on the tax impact of funding rounds, acquisitions, new-state expansion, and other business decisions before they happen — not after.
  • Executive communication. Translating tax exposure and opportunity into plain language leadership and the board can actually act on.

In-house vs. fractional Tax Director

A traditional in-house Tax Director is a full-time employee, usually justified once a company reaches enough scale and tax complexity to keep someone busy year-round on tax matters alone. A fractional Tax Director — VPTax’s model — provides the same function, sized to what a growing company actually needs, without the cost of a full-time salary, benefits, and supporting staff. See what a fractional tax department is for how that structure works.

What makes a good Tax Director

The best Tax Directors combine three things: deep technical expertise (often from Big 4 or large corporate tax department backgrounds), communication skills that make complex tax concepts usable by non-tax executives, and enough business judgment to recognize that “tax is not the be-all end-all” when a company is weighing a decision. VPTax’s Tax Directors are organized by region and specialty — some focused on corporate income tax, others on indirect/sales tax — so each client gets a Tax Director whose background matches their needs.
